Under the bustling streets of Auckland's Karangahape Rd, tucked away behind an inconspicuous door at St Kevin’s Arcade, the local five-piece band, Dick Move, has been gathering for years in the dimly lit Whammy Bar. Their small gigs, beer-swigging sessions, and 3am deep talks have become a regular part of their routine.
Yet, amidst these local rendezvous, there's a remarkable item on their agenda that has been in the works for nearly two years, and its realization was almost jeopardized—the opportunity to open three shows for the Foo Fighters.
The band, consisting of vocalist Lucy Suttor, guitarists Hariet Ellis and Justin Rendell, bassist Lulu Macrae, and drummer Luke Boyes, defines themselves as a socialist punk band that has been electrifying crowds of no more than 700 for almost half a decade.
Tonight, however, marks a significant shift as they step onto the stage in front of an estimated 50,000 people—a colossal audience, easily the biggest gig of their lives.
Dick Move's musical repertoire zeroes in on topics reflecting the punk spirit: politics, social issues, privilege, and holding powerful figures accountable.
"We make music about social and political issues, and the aim is to get people fired up to make a positive change in the world—and we like to have fun while doing it," shares Suttor with 1News.
The band deliberately avoids labeling themselves as musicians or activists. Instead, they view their artistry as a fusion of both, drawn from genuine experiences in the real world.
"The things we write about are the things we’re talking about at the bar at 3 am [like] during the election," explains Suttor. "It’s one thing feeding the other."
Sitting down with 1News at their familiar haunt, Dick Move takes a moment to reflect on their journey leading up to this pivotal moment. They discuss their upcoming shows alongside Dave Grohl and company and ponder what lies ahead once the stadium-sized mosh pits have emptied, and all the foo has been fought.
